It was the summer of 1998, I believe. The events began on the campus of William Jewel College; Independence, MO. It was an event called "Super Summer" run by the Missouri Baptist Convention for junior and senior high school aged students. It all started so innocently with a love of ice tea.
A trio of college women had volunteered for the staff of the event & were enjoying themselves with a leisurely lunch in the cafeteria. Laughing & joking as they left, Little Glass, half full with ice tea, went unnoticed as it made it's escape. "Freedom!" Little Glass cried.
Halfway across campus the unsuspecting accomplice, Chris, realized she was still carrying Little Glass & asked her companions to return it to the cafeteria. Sabrina & Heather agreed & Little Glass was placed in a backpack until the next mealtime, but unfortunately Little Glass would never see her home again.
Upon Sabrina & Heather's return home, Little Glass was discovered and her journey began. Sabrina had the brilliant idea to return it to Chris as a birthday gift the following fall, but time passed & the plan was forgotten.
For nearly a decade now, Little Glass has moved across the state of Missouri & back with Heather, who is a bit forgetful. Heather unpacks a box, discovers Little Glass, places it in plain sight until she decides to clean up & then Little Glass is packed away in a closet again. Little Glass doesn't mind too much, but the daily sight of newsprint has gotten old for Little Glass.
Little Glass does not wish to return to her old life full of hot steam showers, hundreds of thoughtless handlers, and having thousands of germs in her face. No, our little friend longs for a life of travel like the infamous Garden Gnome and Flat Stanley. So today Little Glass is packing her bags and starting a journey. She hopes to rely on the kindness of the trio of women who saved her from an ordinary existence to give her shelter and to help her remain incognito as she strives to remain free from a life of cafeteria slavery.
This blog will document her journey...
